Best in Malayalam Movies -2014 (MovDet List)

  • Best Movie - Iyobinte Pusthakam
The movie goes through the lives of Iyob,a confidante turned master at the tea plantations in munnar and his sons .The movie is interlaced with historical facts and fiction.The movie is written by Gopan Chidambaram and directed by Amal Neerad.It conveys in a subtle way  infighting between brethren for personal gains being utilized by exploiters.The movie started with the message  "The aged aren't always wise, nor do the elderly always understand justice" Job 32:9 which again indirectly says (through the movie as well) that the what would be called rebellion(sometimes revolution) have in future led to just and correct stance .The movie is enriched with beutiful cinematogaraphy and their is also an item song to make it commercially viable without comprising much on the end-product.
  • Best Director - Anjali Menon ( Bangalore Days)
Bangalore days was the biggest grosser of the 2014.It had an array of young actors namely Dulqar,Nivin,Nazriya,Fahad,Parvathy Menon,Nitya Menen,Isha Talwar and was based in the cosmopolitan city Bangalore.The movie deals with human emotions without getting preachy or boring and how the humans react or behave or change in eaction to circumstances.The movie  has been ably directed by Anjali Menon without the characterisations and the story getting complicated.
  • Best Actor -Mammootty (Munnariyippu,Varsham)

Mammootty did the role of a financier in Varsham and that of prison inmate serving sentence for 20 years for double homicide. The character in Varsham has to cope with a tragedy in his life along with his wife.The emotive potrayal of the character by Mammootty leaves you with tears in your eyes.While in Munnariyippu the character denies having killed anyone to the journalist-writer he talks which takes the story back to flashbacks and with an engaging performance from Mammootty.
  • Best Actress - Bhama (Ottamandaram)

Bhama does the role of a fourteen year old girl who has to deal with an early non consensual marriage to her sister's husband itself and following motherhood.Bhama gives a stellar performance as a young girl  who is forced to live according to happenings beyond her control.
  • Best Supporting Actor - Jayasurya (Apothecari,Iyobinte Pusthakam)
    Jayasurya did the role of a patient in Apothecari,and that of a shrewd businessman in Iyobinte Pusthakam.Jayasurya's physical and mental strain in portraying the role of an ailing man in Apothecari shows on screen and the villian role in Iyobinte Pusthakam has been done terrificly by him.
    • Best Supporting Actress - Lena (Vikramadityan)
    Lena does the role of a thief's widow whose only hope is her spoilt brat.She also has to bear his tantrums and his friendly rivalry with their neighbour cop's(her ex-lover) son.Lena has done a remarkably wonderful job as the mother of a man not having much age difference with her.
    • Best Script -Anil Radhakrishna Menon (Saptamasree Thaskaraha)

    Saptmasree Thaskaraha meaning Seven Good Thieves is the second venture of Anil Radhakrishna Menon after critically appreciated North 24 Kaatham.The movie is a heist drama, and is engagingly scripted.
    • Best Debut (Male) - Farhan Fazil (Njan Steve Lopez)

    Farhan didn't have any competition for Newcomers,Fahad's brother made his debut in  Rajeev Ravi's second directorial venture and did a decent job.
    • Best Debut (Female) - Nikki Galrani (1983)

    Nikki Galrani made her malayalam debut in movie 1983 and became the darling of movie lovers.She got a hit song 'Olanjali Kuruvi' in the movie as well.
    • Best Music -Gopi Sundar(1983)

    1983 had few songs,one an excellent melody "Olanjali Kuruvi" sung by Vani Jayaram and Jayachandran,which reminded of 80's melodies and then two songs which shows the aspirations at two different life spans.People loved its music.
